Money: explained simply
Count money, choose the correct amount to pay, or calculate the change.
How to work it out
- 1 euro = 100 cents. If helpful, convert all amounts to cents before calculating.
- Change = amount paid − price. To pay exactly, the selected coins and notes must add up to the price.
An example, step by step
A notebook costs €2.70. You pay with €5. How much change do you get?
- Count up from €2.70 to €3: 30 cents.
- From €3 to €5 is another €2.
- Change: €2.30. Check: €2.70 + €2.30 = €5.
Understand other variations
Count or select coins
€2 + 50 cents + 20 cents = €2.70. There is often more than one way to make an amount. If the task shows coins and notes to choose from, use only those available.
Your turn
You pay for something costing €1.65 with €2. How much change is due?
Show the answer and method
€2.00 − €1.65 = €0.35, or 35 cents.
