Word problems: explained simply

A word problem describes a situation. Work out what is being asked, then turn the situation into a suitable calculation.

How to work it out

  • Read the question carefully and select the information you actually need.
  • Think about what happens: combining, taking away, making equal groups or sharing. Use matching units and write a sentence answering the question.

An example, step by step

Mia buys 3 notebooks at €2 each. She pays with €10. How much change does she get?

  1. First find the total price: 3 · €2 = €6.
  2. Then find the change: €10 − €6 = €4.
  3. Answer: Mia gets €4 change. Check: €6 + €4 = €10.

Understand other variations

Find a question or an unnecessary detail

If the question is missing, make one that the given information can answer. A detail such as Mia's age is not needed for the notebook price. For measurements and decimals, check the units too.

Your turn

12 apples are shared equally among 3 baskets. How many are in each basket?

Show the answer and method

12 : 3 = 4. Each basket contains 4 apples.
