Magic triangles: explained simply
Place the numbers 1 to 6 or 1 to 9 in the circles around a magic triangle. All three sides must have the same total.
How to work it out
- Use each number in the given set exactly once.
- Add every circle on a side, including both corners. A corner circle belongs to two sides.
An example, step by step
Numbers 1 to 6, side total 10. Top corner 1, bottom left 3, bottom right 5.
- The left side needs 10 − 1 − 3 = 6.
- The right side needs 10 − 1 − 5 = 4.
- The bottom needs 10 − 3 − 5 = 2. Every number from 1 to 6 is used once, and every side totals 10.
Understand other variations
More circles or fewer clues
With numbers 1 to 9, each side contains four circles. Subtract all known numbers on a side from the target total. Keep track of which numbers remain unused.
Your turn
A side must total 12. Two of its three circles contain 2 and 6. What is missing?
Show the answer and method
12 − 2 − 6 = 4. In the whole triangle, 4 must also still be available.
