Working with data: explained simply
Summarise a set of measurements or counts using the mean, smallest and greatest values, or range.
How to work it out
- Mean = sum of all values : number of values.
- Range = greatest value − smallest value. It describes the gap between the two extremes.
An example, step by step
Values: 2, 4, 4, 5, 5. Find the mean and range.
- Add: 2 + 4 + 4 + 5 + 5 = 20. There are 5 values.
- Mean: 20 : 5 = 4.
- Smallest value 2, greatest 5. Range: 5 − 2 = 3.
Your turn
Find the mean of 3, 5 and 7.
Show the answer and method
3 + 5 + 7 = 15. Then 15 : 3 = 5.
