Combinations – worksheets to print

Find all the possibilities, e.g. how many towers you can build from three blocks.

  • Choose the number of tasks and the difficulty yourself
  • With an answer sheet and, if you like, a QR code to the answers
  • At three levels (★ to ★★★) and as group A and B
  • As a single worksheet or as a task on a mixed worksheet
This is how it looks on the worksheet – with new numbers every time.

Combinations: explained simply

Find all possible combinations or arrangements. Working systematically helps you avoid missing or counting possibilities twice.

How to work it out

  • Keep the first choice fixed and list every allowed second choice. Only then change the first choice.
  • Check whether order matters and whether items may be reused. These rules determine which possibilities are different.

An example, step by step

You have 2 T-shirts and 3 pairs of trousers. How many outfits with one of each can you make?

  1. The first T-shirt goes with all 3 pairs of trousers: 3 outfits.
  2. The second T-shirt also goes with all 3: another 3 outfits.
  3. Altogether 2 · 3 = 6 outfits. A table with 2 rows and 3 columns shows them all.

Arrangements and pairs

For towers, colour order may matter: red above blue differs from blue above red. For handshakes, Anna–Ben is the same pair as Ben–Anna, so count it once. Also follow rules such as “without repetition”.

Your turn

3 drinks and 2 snacks: how many combinations with one drink and one snack are there?

Show the answer and method

Each drink goes with 2 snacks: 3 · 2 = 6 combinations.
