Understand & practise together

Tally charts: explained simply

A tally records how often something occurs. Marks are bundled in fives so you can count them quickly.

How to work it out

  • Each mark represents one event or object.
  • Draw four marks side by side, then the fifth across them. A complete bundle counts as 5.

An example, step by step

A row shows two bundles of five and three single marks.

  1. The two bundles count as 5 + 5 = 10.
  2. Add the 3 single marks.
  3. The row represents 13.

Understand other variations

Draw a tally

For 8, draw one bundle of five and three single marks. To find the total across categories, add the counts in each row.

Your turn

How do you show 17 with tally marks?

Show the answer and method

Three bundles of five and two single marks: 15 + 2 = 17.
