Chance: explained simply
Think about which outcomes can occur in a chance experiment and which are more likely.
How to work it out
- Certain: it happens for every possible outcome. Impossible: it cannot happen. Possible: it can happen, but need not.
- When individual outcomes are equally likely, an event is more likely if more outcomes match it.
An example, step by step
You roll an ordinary die numbered 1 to 6.
- Rolling a 7 is impossible: there is no 7.
- Rolling a number from 1 to 6 is certain.
- Rolling a 6 is possible, but not certain.
Understand other variations
Compare likelihoods
On a fair die, 2, 4 and 6 are even: three matching outcomes. “A 6” has just one. An even number is therefore more likely. For equal-sized spinner sectors, count matching sectors; for otherwise identical balls, count matching balls.
Your turn
A bag contains only blue balls. Is drawing a blue ball certain, possible or impossible?
Show the answer and method
Certain, because every ball in the bag is blue.
