Counting shapes: explained simply
Recognise geometric shapes in a picture and count how many there are of each type.
How to work it out
- Look at properties: a triangle has three corners; a square has four equal sides and four right angles; a circle has no corners.
- Work through the picture systematically and match each shape to the given category symbol.
An example, step by step
The picture shows a circle, a triangle, another circle and a square.
- Find just the circles first: there are 2.
- Find the triangles: 1. Find the squares: 1.
- Check: 2 + 1 + 1 = 4 shapes, matching the four pictures.

Rotated shapes and more types
A rotated triangle is still a triangle. Harder pictures include more shape types. Use the categories shown in the task: squares and other rectangles are counted separately here.
Your turn
A triangle stands on one corner. How many corners does it now have?
Show the answer and method
Still 3. Turning it does not change the number of corners.
