Continuing patterns: explained simply

A short sequence of shapes repeats. Find this repeating unit and draw the missing shapes.

How to work it out

  • Check both shape and shading: an outline circle and a filled circle may be different parts of the pattern.
  • Find the shortest complete sequence that repeats regularly. After its end, start again at its beginning.

An example, step by step

Circle, circle, triangle, circle, circle, triangle, □, □, □

  1. The repeating unit is circle, circle, triangle.
  2. After the second triangle, the same unit starts again.
  3. The next shapes are circle, circle and triangle.

Your turn

Show the answer and method
