Cube buildings: explained simply

A cube building consists of stacks of small cubes. A plan viewed from above records the height of each stack.

How to work it out

  • For each position, count every cube from the ground to the top, including hidden cubes underneath.
  • Write the stack height in the plan, or 0 for an empty position. Add the heights to find the total number of cubes.

An example, step by step

Three positions have stacks of heights 2, 1 and 3.

  1. The first stack has 2 cubes and the second has 1.
  2. The third has 3 cubes, even if some are partly hidden.
  3. Altogether: 2 + 1 + 3 = 6 cubes.

Your turn

A plan has two rows: 2, 0 and 1, 3. How many cubes are there?

Show the answer and method

2 + 0 + 1 + 3 = 6 cubes.
