Making up numbers: explained simply
Find the missing amount needed to reach a target, such as 10, 20, 100 or 1,000.
How to work it out
- Missing part = target − known part.
- You can count up in small steps: first to the next multiple of ten, then on to the target.
An example, step by step
63 + □ = 100
- From 63 to 70, you need 7.
- From 70 to 100, you need 30.
- Altogether: 7 + 30 = 37. Check: 63 + 37 = 100.
Understand other variations
Written as subtraction
For 100 − □ = 63, the missing number is also 37. Ask: how much must I take away from 100 to leave 63?
Your turn
46 + □ = 100
Show the answer and method
You need 4 to reach 50, then another 50. So 4 + 50 = 54.
