Expressions & equations: explained simply
A letter such as x stands for a number. An expression describes a calculation; an equation says two expressions have equal value.
How to work it out
- To substitute, replace each x with the given value and follow the order of operations.
- To solve, do the same operation to both sides of the equation. Use inverse operations to isolate x step by step.
An example, step by step
Solve 3 · x + 2 = 14.
- Subtract 2 from both sides: 3 · x = 12.
- Divide both sides by 3: x = 4.
- Check in the original equation: 3 · 4 + 2 = 14. It works.
Understand other variations
Write an expression for a situation
One notebook costs x euros. Three notebooks cost 3 · x euros. If x = 2, that is €6. “Three more than x” would instead be x + 3.
Equivalent expressions and balances
2 · (x + 3) and 2 · x + 6 are equal for every x. On a balance, remove or add the same amount on both sides to keep it balanced. For 3 · x + 2 = x + 10, you can first subtract x from both sides.
Your turn
Solve 2 · x + 3 = 11.
Show the answer and method
Subtract 3 on both sides: 2 · x = 8. Divide by 2: x = 4. Check: 2 · 4 + 3 = 11.
