Calculating in steps – worksheets to print

Calculate step by step: first the hundreds, then the tens, then the ones – with the answers in between.

  • Choose the number of tasks and the difficulty yourself
  • With an answer sheet and, if you like, a QR code to the answers
  • At three levels (★ to ★★★) and as group A and B
  • As a single worksheet or as a task on a mixed worksheet
This is how it looks on the worksheet – with new numbers every time.

Calculating in steps: explained simply

Break numbers into manageable parts and write down the intermediate steps of your calculation.

How to work it out

  • For addition and subtraction, split the second number into hundreds, tens and units and deal with them one at a time.
  • For multiplication and division, split one number into suitable parts, calculate each part and add the partial answers.

An example, step by step

46 + 28

  1. Split 28 into 20 + 8.
  2. First calculate 46 + 20 = 66.
  3. Then 66 + 8 = 74. So 46 + 28 = 74.

Understand other variations

Multiply and divide in parts

3 · 24 = 3 · 20 + 3 · 4 = 60 + 12 = 72. For 84 : 4, divide 80 and 4 separately: 80 : 4 + 4 : 4 = 20 + 1 = 21. Split the number being divided, not the divisor.

Given steps or your own method

If steps are given, fill the missing intermediate answers. Otherwise, write your own suitable method. Other correct ways of splitting are possible too.

Your turn

Calculate 73 − 26 in two steps.

Show the answer and method

73 − 20 = 53; 53 − 6 = 47.
