Calculating with decimals: explained simply
Decimals have place values after the decimal point: tenths, hundredths and thousandths. These help you calculate.
How to work it out
- For addition and subtraction, line up matching place values and decimal points. Add trailing zeros when useful.
- For multiplication, calculate without the decimal points first. The answer has as many decimal places as the two factors together. When dividing by a natural number, keep track of the decimal point in the answer.
An example, step by step
2.5 + 0.75
- Write 2.5 as 2.50. Its value does not change.
- Add by place value: 2.50 + 0.75 = 3.25.
- Check: 3.25 − 0.75 = 2.50.
Understand other variations
Multiplication
1.2 · 0.3: calculate 12 · 3 = 36. The factors have two decimal places altogether, so the answer is 0.36.
Division
Think of 4.8 : 3 as 48 tenths divided by 3. That is 16 tenths, or 1.6. These tasks divide by natural numbers.
Your turn
Calculate 3.6 : 3.
Show the answer and method
36 tenths : 3 = 12 tenths. Answer: 1.2.
