Quick calculations: explained simply
Practise short addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems. Sometimes the answer is missing; sometimes a number inside the calculation is missing.
How to work it out
- Addition means adding more; subtraction means taking away. Multiplication combines equal groups. Division means sharing equally or making groups.
- Use the inverse operation to find a missing number: addition and subtraction undo each other, as do multiplication and division.
An example, step by step
7 + □ = 15
- Find how much is missing between 7 and 15.
- Calculate 15 − 7 = 8. Put 8 in the gap.
- Check: 7 + 8 = 15. Both sides have the same value.
Understand other variations
Division with a remainder
17 : 5 = 3 remainder 2, because 3 · 5 + 2 = 17. The remainder must be smaller than the number you divide by.
A different number is missing
For □ − 4 = 9, calculate 9 + 4 = 13. For 20 : □ = 5, use 20 : 5 = 4. First identify which number is missing.
Your turn
Find the missing number: □ · 4 = 28
Show the answer and method
28 : 4 = 7. Check: 7 · 4 = 28.
