Fact families – worksheets to print

Three numbers make swapped and inverse calculations, e.g. 3 + 4 = 7 and 7 − 4 = 3.

  • Choose the number of tasks and the difficulty yourself
  • With an answer sheet and, if you like, a QR code to the answers
  • At three levels (★ to ★★★) and as group A and B
  • As a single worksheet or as a task on a mixed worksheet
This is how it looks on the worksheet – with new numbers every time.

Fact families: explained simply

Three related numbers form a fact family. Knowing one calculation helps you work out the others.

How to work it out

  • In addition and multiplication, swapping the two numbers leaves the answer unchanged.
  • An addition fact gives subtraction facts; a multiplication fact gives division facts.

An example, step by step

Make the fact family for 3, 4 and 7.

  1. The addition fact is 3 + 4 = 7. Swap the numbers: 4 + 3 = 7.
  2. Take one part away from the total: 7 − 3 = 4.
  3. Take the other part away: 7 − 4 = 3.

Understand other variations

Multiplication and division

For 3, 4 and 12: 3 · 4 = 12, 4 · 3 = 12, 12 : 3 = 4 and 12 : 4 = 3. In swap-and-inverse tasks, enter the particular facts requested.

Your turn

Which four multiplication and division facts belong to 2, 5 and 10?

Show the answer and method

2 · 5 = 10; 5 · 2 = 10; 10 : 2 = 5; 10 : 5 = 2.
