Long × and ÷: explained simply
Long multiplication and division break larger calculations into place-value steps. Write down the intermediate results.
How to work it out
- In multiplication, use each digit of the second factor, respecting its place value, then add the partial products.
- In division, work from left to right: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down the next digit.
An example, step by step
156 : 3
- 1 is smaller than 3, so start with 15: 15 : 3 = 5. Write 5 in the answer.
- 5 · 3 = 15. Subtract 15 to leave 0. Bring down the last digit, 6.
- 6 : 3 = 2. Subtract 2 · 3 = 6, leaving 0. Answer: 52. Check: 52 · 3 = 156.
Understand other variations
Long multiplication
For 123 · 24, calculate 123 · 4 = 492 and 123 · 20 = 2,460. The tens row starts one place further left. Add to get 2,952. Within each partial multiplication, work from right to left and include carries.
Zeros and remainders
For 612 : 3, after the first answer digit you get a 1, which is too small to divide by 3 in whole numbers. Write 0 in the answer and bring down the 2. Answer: 204. For 157 : 3, the answer is 52 remainder 1; check: 52 · 3 + 1 = 157.
Your turn
Calculate 84 : 4.
Show the answer and method
8 : 4 = 2; subtract 8 and bring down 4. Then 4 : 4 = 1. Answer: 21; check: 21 · 4 = 84.
