Calculating with fractions: explained simply
A fraction describes parts of a whole. The denominator below tells you the size of the parts; the numerator above tells you how many parts are meant.
How to work it out
- To make an equivalent fraction or simplify it, multiply numerator and denominator by the same number or divide both by the same common factor. The value stays the same.
- For addition and subtraction, use a common denominator. Then calculate with the numerators and keep that denominator.
An example, step by step
1/2 + 1/3
- Use a common part size: sixths. 1/2 = 3/6 and 1/3 = 2/6.
- Add the numerators: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
- 5 and 6 have no common factor other than 1. The fraction is fully simplified.
Understand other variations
Multiplication and division
Multiply numerator by numerator and denominator by denominator: 2/3 · 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction: 2/3 : 1/4 = 2/3 · 4/1 = 8/3 = 2 2/3.
A fraction of an amount
3/4 of 20 m: divide by 4 first, then multiply by 3. 20 : 4 · 3 = 15. The answer is 15 m.
Your turn
Calculate 1/4 + 1/2.
Show the answer and method
1/2 = 2/4. So 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4.
