Fractions of shapes: explained simply
A fraction tells you how many equal parts of a whole are meant. Read a shaded fraction or shade the parts yourself.
How to work it out
- The denominator below counts all the equal parts of the whole.
- The numerator above counts the selected parts. 3/4 means three out of four equal parts.
An example, step by step
A strip has 8 equal sections. 3 are shaded.
- Count all the sections: 8. This is the denominator.
- Count the shaded sections: 3. This is the numerator.
- The shaded fraction is 3/8.

Shade a fraction
For 1/2 of a rectangle with 8 equal sections, shade 4 sections, because 1/2 = 4/8. Different arrangements can show the same fraction.
Your turn
2 out of 6 equal parts are shaded. What fraction is that?
Show the answer and method
2/6. In simplest form, it is 1/3: divide numerator and denominator by 2.
