Number sequences: explained simply

A number sequence follows a rule. Discover the rule, then fill gaps or continue the sequence.

How to work it out

  • Compare several consecutive numbers: is the same amount always added or subtracted?
  • In alternating patterns, two steps repeat, such as +5, −2, +5, −2.

An example, step by step

4, 7, 10, □, □

  1. From 4 to 7 is +3. From 7 to 10 is also +3.
  2. Continue with the same step: 10 + 3 = 13.
  3. Add 3 again: 13 + 3 = 16.

Alternating steps

In 4, 9, 7, 12, the steps alternate between +5 and −2. The next numbers are 10 and 15. Check both steps in several places.

Continue: 20, 18, 16, □, □.
