Roman numerals: explained simply
Roman numerals use letters. Add their values, except for certain pairs where you subtract.
How to work it out
- The basic symbols are I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1,000.
- Usually larger values come before smaller ones and you add them. In IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM, subtract the smaller symbol written before the larger one.
An example, step by step
What number is XIV?
- X stands for 10.
- IV is the subtraction pair 5 − 1 = 4.
- Altogether: 10 + 4 = 14. So XIV = 14.
