Decimals: explained simply

Fractions and decimals can describe the same amount. Convert between them, compare decimals, or multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1,000.

How to work it out

  • The places after the decimal point are tenths, hundredths and thousandths: 0.25 = 25/100 = 1/4.
  • Compare the whole-number parts first, then each decimal place. Trailing zeros do not change the value: 0.5 = 0.50.

An example, step by step

Which is greater: 0.7 or 0.65?

  1. Write both in hundredths: 0.70 and 0.65.
  2. Compare 70 hundredths with 65 hundredths.
  3. 70 hundredths is more. So 0.7 > 0.65.

Understand other variations

Multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1,000

Multiplying by 10, 100 or 1,000 moves the decimal point one, two or three places right. Dividing moves it left. For example: 2.35 · 10 = 23.5 and 2.35 : 10 = 0.235. Add zeros where needed.

Your turn

Write 3/4 as a decimal.

Show the answer and method

3/4 = 75/100 = 0.75.
