Number houses: explained simply

In a number house, the two numbers on each floor add up to the number in the roof.

How to work it out

  • Left number + right number = roof number, separately for each floor.
  • Find the missing number by subtracting the known number from the roof number.

An example, step by step

The roof shows 10 and the left room shows 7. What goes on the right?

  1. The two rooms must add up to 10.
  2. Calculate 10 − 7 = 3. Put 3 on the right.
  3. Check: 7 + 3 = 10.

Your turn

Roof 20, right room 8: what goes on the left?

Show the answer and method

20 − 8 = 12, because 12 + 8 = 20.
