Neighbouring numbers: explained simply
Find the numbers immediately before and after a number, or the multiples of ten or one hundred that it lies between.
How to work it out
- Previous number = number − 1; next number = number + 1.
- Neighbouring tens are the nearest multiples of ten below and above the number. For neighbouring hundreds, find the corresponding multiples of one hundred.
An example, step by step
Find the neighbouring tens of 47.
- The multiple of ten below 47 is 40.
- The next multiple of ten above it is 50.
- Check: 40 < 47 < 50.
