Dice patterns: explained simply

Recognise the dots on a die. If several dice are shown, add their values together.

How to work it out

  • Each dot counts as 1. Familiar dice patterns can be recognised as a whole amount.
  • With two or three dice, add the dots on all the dice shown.

An example, step by step

One die shows 5 and another shows 3.

  1. Recognise 5 as four corner dots and one in the centre.
  2. The second die shows 3.
  3. Altogether: 5 + 3 = 8 dots.

Your turn

Three dice show 2, 4 and 3. How many dots are there altogether?

Show the answer and method

2 + 4 + 3 = 9 dots.
