Number line: explained simply

On a number line, equal distances represent equal changes in value. Read the numbers at the marked positions.

How to work it out

  • First find the value of one interval between two marks.
  • Count intervals from a known value and add or subtract the corresponding steps.

An example, step by step

There are five equal intervals between 20 and 30. Find the third mark after 20.

  1. The whole distance represents 30 − 20 = 10.
  2. One interval is worth 10 : 5 = 2.
  3. Three intervals after 20: 20 + 3 · 2 = 26.

Your turn

Each interval is worth 5. Which number is two intervals to the right of 35?

Show the answer and method

35 + 2 · 5 = 45.
